Travel Light: How to Pack Carry-On Only for International Trips

So far, I've traveled out of the country twice this year—to Cancun, Mexico, and Panama City, Panamá. Both times, I packed carry-on only. Why, you may ask? Let me paint a picture for you:

You've checked in and handed over your bags at the airline's kiosk. You wait at the gate, board the aircraft, and everything seems fine during the flight. But when you get to baggage claim, anxiety sets in. You watch as everyone else grabs their bags from the carousel. As the minutes tick by, a pit forms in your stomach. It's been 25 minutes, and there are only three bags left on the carousel—none of them yours.

I've heard too many sad, horrible lost luggage stories. Losing luggage domestically is one thing, but losing it internationally is even worse. For me, I typically pack many travel essentials that would be hard to find or too expensive to repurchase. This is why I always opt for a carry-on. Here’s how you can do it too:

Why Pack Carry-On Only for an International Flight?

1. Convenience and Mobility:

  • Avoid the hassle of checking in luggage and waiting at baggage claim. This saves time and makes your travel experience smoother.
  • Easily navigate through airports and public transportation without the burden of heavy, bulky luggage.

2. Cost Savings:

  • Many airlines charge additional fees for checked baggage. By sticking to a carry-on, you can avoid these extra costs.

3. Security and Peace of Mind:

  • Keep your belongings with you, reducing the risk of lost or delayed luggage
    • Ensure you have immediate access to your essentials, such as medications, important documents, and valuables.

Afraid of your bag being gate-checked?

    • Try to pick a seat closer to the front with early boarding or see if there is an option to pay a fee for priority boarding to ensure you have overhead bin space.

    4. Flexibility:

    • If your flight is delayed or canceled, having a carry-on makes it easier to switch flights or travel arrangements without worrying about your luggage being rerouted.

How to Pack in a Carry-On Only for an International Flight.

    1. Choose the Right Bag:

    • Select a carry-on bag that meets your airline's size and weight restrictions to avoid additional fees.
    • Look for a lightweight, durable, and well-organized bag with multiple compartments for efficient packing.

    2. Plan Your Outfits:

    • Check the weather at your destination to pack appropriately.
    • Try a capsule wardrobe by packing versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched. Stick to a neutral color palette and choose lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics.
      • If you're not a fan of capsule wardrobes, consider planning outfits based on your itinerary.
      •  Alternatively, travel light and buy clothes at your destination.
    • Roll your clothes to save space and minimize wrinkles. Consider using packing cubes to keep everything organized.

    3. Limit Shoes and Accessories:

    • Pack only essential footwear and accessories to minimize bulk and maximize space in your carry-on. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane to save space.
    • Consider opting for multifunctional items like scarves or hats that can serve multiple purposes.
      • If possible, try to pack inexpensive jewelry in case it may be lost, stolen, or damaged at your destination.

    4. Use Travel-Sized Toiletries:

    • Comply with the 3-1-1 rule for liquids and pack travel-sized toiletries in a clear, resealable plastic bag to expedite security checks.
    • Check your visiting country's requirements, as the 3-1-1 rule typically does not apply to medically necessary liquids.
    • Opt for solid toiletries like shampoo bars and soap to save space and avoid liquid restrictions.

    5. Pack Smart with Technology:

    • Carry essential electronics like your phone, charger, and a universal power adapter in your carry-on for easy access during your flight. Consider a lightweight tablet instead of a laptop if possible.
    • Store all electronics and valuable items in easily accessible compartments for security checks.

    6. Organize Important Documents:

    • Keep your passport, travel itinerary, boarding passes, and other important documents in a dedicated travel wallet or organizer to prevent loss or damage.
    • Make digital copies of important documents and store them in a secure cloud service for backup.

    7. Prepare for In-Flight Comfort:

    • Pack a small bag with in-flight essentials such as a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, snacks, and a refillable water bottle to stay comfortable during your flight.
    • Dress in layers to adjust to varying temperatures on the plane and maximize comfort during long flights.

    8. Utilize Space Efficiently:

    • Fill empty spaces with smaller items like socks, underwear, or chargers to maximize space in your carry-on.
    • Consider wearing bulkier items like jackets and sweaters during the flight to save space in your carry-on luggage.

    9. Get Currency Before You Travel:

    • Obtain local currency from your local bank before traveling to avoid high airport exchange rates.
    • Having cash on hand upon arrival can be convenient for immediate expenses.

    10. Maximize Personal Item Space:

    • Consider using a larger personal item such as a backpack or tote bag to pack additional essentials and create more space in your carry-on luggage.
      • Check the airline's dimensions for personal items to ensure compliance.
